Event Details

One of the eighty grand affairs at the TD Halifax Jazz Festival, July 8-16, 2011.

Gordon Grdina & Kenton Loewen (VAN)
modern jazz / improv / Arabic classical

Take a jazz drummer who cut his teeth on the punk floor and pair him with a beautifully romantic virtuoso oudist/guitarist who loves metal, Arabic music and ballads, and you have song-forms with drama as epic as a Bollywood film. Gordon Grdina and Kenton Loewen exhibit a dichot- omy of free yet completely focused performance, of traditional love and modern context. The Georgia Straight says that this is modern jazz for metalheads and CODA says that the music has, “the intensity of John McLaughlin and the linear phrasing of Joe Morris, with a bit of John Zorn attitude thrown in for good measure.” Having played as a trio at the Sonic Temple in 2009, Gordon Grdina (East Van Strings) and Kenton Loewen (Po’ Girl, Dan Mangan) have already shown Halifax audiences their range and stated their promise of surprising all listeners.

Personnel: Gordon Grdina (guitar/oud) and Kenton Loewen (drums)

Geordie Haley Trio (HFX)
improv / jazz

When guitarist Geordie Haley arrived in Halifax from Toronto, local cre- ative music musicians had good reasons to be excited. Haley’s bold approach to exploration and his ability to combine melody, har- mony, dissonance, percussive noises and microtonal filigrees all at the same time has made him fascinating to watch and to hear. Growing up with folk music, but settling on jazz as a teenager, Geordie Haley has extended his musical ventures further as composer, improviser, educator and guitarist. His groups tell the story: the Delta East Trio tablas opened his playing to Indian motifs; the Everytime Band featured a wide pal- ette of improvisation including the vocal gymnastics of Christine Duncan and the laptop manipulation of Eugene Martynec; and, in Halifax, Zokugaku, his collaborations with local musicians and ensemble asso- ciations have pushed ideas of space and music, the integration of spoken word, beatbox and dance with improv music (The Roar) as well as straight up jazz. No doubt, Geordie Haley is a creative music adventurer.

Personnel: Geordie Haley (guitar), Ron Hynes (bass) and Doug Cameron (drums)
